The "Modern Olympic Games" refers to the international multi-sport event revived in the nineteenth century, distinct from the ancient Olympic Games of Greece. It began after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 on the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin, with the mandate to organize a global sporting event modelled on the ancient Olympics.

The IOC was founded in 1894; the first modern Olympic Games followed two years later in Athens, Greece, bringing together athletes from 14 nations across 43 events -- the historic starting point of the modern Olympic movement.
