Concept

Kurt Lewin’s Equation states B = f(P, E): behaviour — including a student’s classroom performance — is a function of the person and the environment taken together, never of either one alone.

P covers what the individual brings (ability, prior learning, drive, beliefs, emotional state); E covers the surrounding conditions (home, family relationships, school, peers). Together they form the psychological life space, and field theory holds that behaviour at any moment is governed by the forces currently acting in that life space.

The diagnostic move this gives a teacher is simple: find which term has actually changed, because that is where the present force is coming from and where an intervention has the most leverage.

Application

The stem describes the student as capable, so ability and prior learning — the P side — were already adequate and are not what changed.

What changed is the home field: ongoing divorce proceedings between the parents. The emotional distress and low focus are described as a consequence of that change, not as a pre-existing trait.

So under B = f(P, E) the altered term is E, and the intervention with the most immediate and influential reach is the one acting on that family condition — counselling the parents on their relationship.
