The ratio of spirit and water in solution A is 5 : 2 and it is 7 : 6 in solution B. Seven litres of A is mixed with thirteen litres of B to form the resulting solution. How much spirit (in ml) should be added to 200 ml of the resulting solution so that the final solution contains spirit and water in the ratio 2 : 1?

Correct answer: B
In 7 L of A, spirit = 5 L and water = 2 L. In 13 L of B, spirit = 7 L and water = 6 L. So the resulting mixture has spirit:water = 12:8 = 3:2. In 200 ml of this mixture, spirit = 120 ml and water = 80 ml. To make the ratio 2:1, spirit must be 160 ml for 80 ml water, so extra spirit required = 160 - 120 = 40 ml.
