Correct answer: B

Let the initial number of fruits be x.

  1. After the first sale (he sells half of x plus 1/2): remaining = x − (x/2 + 1/2) = x/2 − 1/2.

  2. After the second sale (he sells half of the remaining plus 1/2): remaining = (x/2 − 1/2) − (1/2*(x/2 − 1/2) + 1/2) = x/4 − 3/4.

  3. After the third sale (he again sells half of the remaining plus 1/2): remaining = (x/4 − 3/4) − (1/2*(x/4 − 3/4) + 1/2) = x/8 − 7/8.

The store is exhausted, so final remaining = 0. Solve x/8 − 7/8 = 0 ⇒ x = 7.

  • Check with x = 7: first sale sells 3.5 + 0.5 = 4, remaining 3.

  • Second sale sells 1.5 + 0.5 = 2, remaining 1.

  • Third sale sells 0.5 + 0.5 = 1, remaining 0 (store exhausted).
