Free Space Management is the mechanism used by the file system to record all free blocks on a disk, ensuring that newly created files are allocated space efficiently without overwriting existing data.
Common Techniques
1. Bit Vector (Bit Map)
Working: The free space is represented as a sequence of bits, where each bit corresponds to a specific disk block.
Key Feature: A value of
1indicates a free block, while0indicates an allocated block. It is highly efficient for finding contiguous free blocks but can consume significant memory as disk sizes grow.
2. Linked List
Working: All free disk blocks are linked together using pointers. The first free block contains a pointer to the next free block, and so on.
Key Feature: The OS only needs to keep the address of the first free block in memory. It causes zero memory overhead but traversing the list to find free blocks can be slow.
3. Grouping
Working: A modification of the linked list approach where the first free block stores the addresses of a large number (e.g., n) of other free blocks.
Key Feature: The first n-1 blocks are actually free, and the last block contains the addresses of the next cluster of free blocks, allowing quick access to multiple free blocks at once.
