Comprehension:
Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
A radical new surgery procedure, laughed at not long ago, is holding out fresh hope for patients of cardiac myopathy, or enlargement of the heart. The technique, now in India, allows patients to go home two weeks after the operation, to lead a near-normal sedentary life. Cardiac myopathy is a condition that has a variety of causative factors. An attack from one of the 20 identified viruses, parasite infection, long-term alcohol abuse and blood pressure could bring it on, and in rare cases, it could follow child birth and is even known to run in families. The condition is marked by an increase in the size of the heart's chambers and a decrease in the efficiency of pumping. In patients suffering from cardiac myopathy there is ________________.

  1. A.

    Increased heart beat

  2. B.

Slow down of the heart beat

  3. C.

Increase in the blood flow to the heart

  4. D.

Normal blood flow to the heart

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Answer: Increased heart beat

Explanation: The passage states that cardiac myopathy is marked by an increase in the size of the heart's chambers and a decrease in the efficiency of pumping. When the heart's pumping efficiency falls, the body often compensates by increasing the heart rate to try to maintain adequate blood circulation.

  • Because pumping efficiency decreases, the heart typically beats faster (an increased heartbeat) to preserve cardiac output.

  • A slowed heartbeat is not supported by the passage; slowing would not compensate for reduced pumping efficiency.

  • There is no indication of increased or normal blood flow to the heart; the passage emphasizes reduced efficiency, so neither 'increased blood flow' nor 'normal blood flow' are supported.
