Concept

A life-cycle process standard defines a common framework of processes, activities, and tasks used across the creation and continued operation of software. Standards for product quality, management systems, or process assessment address different scopes.

The governing test is therefore scope: choose the standard whose subject is software life-cycle processes rather than a quality model, a management system, or an assessment model.

Application

ISO/IEC 12207 establishes the common framework for software life-cycle processes. Its scope covers activities and tasks across acquisition, supply, development, operation, maintenance, and disposal, and BIS adopted the corresponding standard as IS 16124:2020.
