The Schedules of the Constitution of India are appended lists that tabulate specific subjects — official languages, anti-defection rules, the powers devolved to local bodies, and so on. A local self-government body draws its list of functions from a dedicated Schedule read together with the relevant article of Part IX (Panchayats).

Panchayati Raj — rural local self-government — was institutionalised by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992. That amendment inserted the Eleventh Schedule, which enumerates 29 functional subjects (for example agriculture, rural housing, drinking water and primary education) that a State Legislature may entrust to the Panchayats under Article 243G.
