Concept

In cricket commercial rights, a "title sponsor for all matches of the BCCI" is the brand whose name is attached to every match staged or controlled by the Board across formats - international home matches, domestic tournaments and age-group cricket. This is distinct from a team or jersey sponsor, whose logo only appears on the players' kit, and from a tournament-specific sponsor such as the IPL title sponsor.

Application

In September 2022 the company that acquired the title-sponsorship rights covering all of the BCCI's international home, domestic and junior matches was Mastercard, which took over these board-wide title rights from the previous title sponsor. Its name was therefore associated with every BCCI-run fixture across formats, not just one team or one league. (These board-wide title rights later moved to a different sponsor from the 2023-24 season, but among the companies listed here Mastercard is the one that held this all-match BCCI title role.)

Contrast

• Byju was associated with the Indian team as a jersey/team sponsor, which covers the players' kit branding - not the title sponsorship of every BCCI match.

• Vivo and Oppo are smartphone brands linked to IPL/league title deals and team sponsorships at various times, which are tournament- or team-level rights rather than board-wide BCCI title sponsorship.

• Reliance holds the BCCI's media/broadcast and digital rights through its group companies, which is a broadcasting deal - a different category from being the on-ground title sponsor of all matches.

Because only Mastercard holds the board-wide title-sponsorship rights across all BCCI matches, it is the correct choice.
