Correct answer: D

Concept

Wind (aeolian) erosion is the removal of loose topsoil by strong winds. It dominates wherever the climate is arid or semi-arid: low and erratic rainfall, sparse vegetation cover, and dry, loose, sandy soils that the wind can lift and carry. Where rainfall is high, water erosion dominates instead.

Applying it here

India's hot arid zone is the northwestern desert belt centred on the Thar Desert. The state with by far the largest wind-eroded area is Rajasthan, where wind erosion and sand-dune movement affect the bulk of the western districts; the adjoining arid tracts of Gujarat (Kutch and Saurashtra) form the same dry, wind-swept belt. So the pair most affected by wind erosion is Rajasthan together with Gujarat.

Contrast with the other regions

  • Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra: their characteristic problem is water erosion and gully/ravine formation (e.g. the Chambal ravines), not wind erosion.

  • Kerala and Tamil Nadu: high-rainfall southern states where running water (sheet and rill erosion on slopes) is the main agent, not wind.

  • Punjab and Uttar Pradesh: fertile, well-watered alluvial plains; Uttar Pradesh in particular is not part of any wind-erosion belt.

Result

The arid northwestern pair, Gujarat and Rajasthan, is the region most severely affected by wind erosion.
