ICICI is the initialism of a development financial institution that was set up in 1955 to provide medium- and long-term finance to Indian industry; the bank we know today grew out of that institution.

ICICI stands for Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India - the four key words Industrial, Credit, Investment and Corporation give the letters I, C, I and C, followed by "of India". Although ICICI Bank Ltd. was incorporated in 1994 as a subsidiary, its name carries forward the original 1955 institution's title.

Why the other expansions are wrong

• "Infrastructure Creation and Investment Company of India" replaces Industrial with Infrastructure and Corporation with Company - these are not the registered words.

• "Industrial Credit and Infrastructure Corpus of India" keeps Industrial and Credit but swaps Investment for Infrastructure and Corporation for Corpus.

• "Investment Corporation for Industrial Credit in India" uses the right vocabulary but in the wrong order, so it does not spell the institution's actual name.
