Correct answer: A

As per the Census of India, the proportion of Madhya Pradesh's population living in rural areas fell from about 73.5% in 2001 to about 72.4% in 2011, while the share living in urban areas rose from about 26.5% to about 27.6% over the same period. Although the absolute number of people increased in both rural and urban areas, the rural share of the total population declined and the urban share grew. This shift reflects ongoing urbanisation, where the urban population grew faster (about 25.7% during 2001-2011) than the rural population (about 18.4%). Hence the percentage of rural population decreased while the percentage of urban population increased.
