Concept

A logical Venn diagram places one class wholly inside another when every member of the first is a member of the second (subset), makes two classes overlap when they merely share some members, and keeps two classes apart only when they can share no member. A relationship that is merely possible must be left open — it must not be forced and must not be ruled out.

Applying it to Females, Mothers, Lawyers

  1. Every mother is a female, so Mothers is a subset of Females: the Mothers circle must lie completely inside the Females circle.

  2. A lawyer may be male or female, and some lawyers are female. So Lawyers must overlap Females (they share the female lawyers) but must not lie completely inside Females (male lawyers stay outside).

  3. A lawyer can also be a mother — a female lawyer who is a mother. Since that case is possible, the Lawyers circle must be allowed to overlap the Mothers circle as well; that shared region naturally lies inside Females, since a mother-lawyer is also a female.

Choosing the figure

The correct figure is the one with the small circle (Mothers) completely inside the large circle (Females), and a third circle (Lawyers) cutting into the large circle deeply enough to also overlap the small inner circle. This is the only figure that satisfies all three facts together.

Cross-check against the near miss

The figure where the third circle overlaps only the large circle and stays clear of the small inner circle looks similar, but it forces Lawyers and Mothers to share no member — i.e. 'no lawyer is a mother'. Nothing in the statements supports that, and it contradicts the real possibility of a mother who is a lawyer, so that figure is rejected.
