Three statements showing relationships have been given, which are followed by two conclusions I and II. Assuming that the given statements are true, find out which of the conclusions is/are definitely true? Statements: M < R

L > S

L = M ≥ N ≤ P

Conclusions: (I) P > S (II) N < R

  1. A.

    Only conclusion (I) is true

  2. B.

    Only conclusion (II) is true

  3. C.

    Both conclusions (I) and (II) are true

  4. D.

    Neither conclusion (I) nor (II) is true

Correct answer: B

From statement (2) and (3): L > S and L = M ⇒ M > S . From (3): L = M ≥ N ⇒ M ≥ N (so N ≤ M). From M < R (statement 1) we have M < R . Combining M ≥ N and M < R gives N < R (since N ≤ M < R ⇒ N < R). So conclusion (II) N < R is definitely true. For conclusion (I) P > S : from (3) we only know P ≥ N and from above M > S and M ≥ N . But there is no definite relation between P and S — P could be ≤ S or > S depending on values. Hence conclusion (I) is not definitely true. Therefore only conclusion (II) is certainly true.
