Concept

When a figure is completed by reflection, every point keeps the same perpendicular distance from the mirror line while moving to the opposite side. Line endpoints, triangle orientation, and marker positions must all reflect together; the reflected part must not introduce any new symbol.

Application

The left pair reveals the rule, and the same rule can then be applied to the right pair.

  1. Compare the upper-left and lower-left quadrants: the lower quadrant is the vertical reflection of the upper one across the central horizontal line. The upright triangle becomes inverted, and the hollow circle moves from the upper-right region to the lower-right region.

  2. Reflect the upper-right quadrant in the same way. Its upright triangle must point downward with its vertex at the lower centre; its extra diagonal must run from the upper-left corner toward the right midpoint; and its hollow circle must move from upper-left to lower-left.

  3. The unshaded figure with that inverted triangle, that upper-left-to-right-midpoint diagonal, and the hollow circle in the lower-left preserves every reflected feature.
