Direction: Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given below:

Following are the criteria for selecting team leader for the software company XYZ. The candidate should

(i) Have a work experience of at least four years as an Associate Engineer.

(ii) Be fluent in English.

(iii) Have scored at least 90% in the interview.

(iv) Knows either Telugu or Hindi.

(v) Be at least 30 years and not more than 40 years as on 01-12-2013.

If the candidate satisfies all the above criteria, the candidate may be selected. If the candidate fulfills all the criteria except,

(a) criterion (i) but has a work experience of at least five years as a Testing Engineer, then he/she is referred to Senior Software Engineer.

(b) criterion (v) but has a work experience of at least nine years as a Software Engineer then he/she is referred to Manager.

Based on the above information and data given in each question, you have to decide the course of action. You are not to assume anything. The following information is provided as on 01-12-2013.

Now read the information provided in each question and mark your answer accordingly.

Correct answer: D

Concept: A selection decision table is checked criterion by criterion. Selection follows directly only when ALL the base criteria (i)-(v) hold. When a candidate fails exactly ONE base criterion, check whether they clear the specific extra experience threshold tied to that criterion's exception clause - that match decides the outcome, not a blanket rejection.

  1. English fluency (ii): Charu is fluent in English - satisfied.

  2. Interview score (iii): She scored 90%, meeting the 'at least 90%' threshold - satisfied.

  3. Language (iv): She knows Telugu, one of the two accepted languages - satisfied.

  4. Age (v): She is 34, within the 30-40 year band as on 01-12-2013 - satisfied.

  5. Associate Engineer experience (i): Her listed roles are Software Engineer (ten years) and Testing Engineer (six years) - no Associate Engineer experience at all, so criterion (i) is NOT satisfied.

  6. She therefore fails only criterion (i) while meeting (ii)-(v) - exactly the failure pattern exception (a) is written for. Exception (a) also requires at least five years of experience as a Testing Engineer; her six years clears that bar.

Cross-check: exception (b) needs a failure on criterion (v) specifically, but Charu satisfies (v), so (b) does not apply here. With exception (a) satisfied and no other exception in play, the case must be referred to the Senior Software Engineer rather than being selected, rejected, or called indeterminate.
