Which of the following became the 26th State of India?

India's state boundaries have been reorganised several times since independence; the most significant round in 2000 saw Parliament carve three new states out of larger, more populous states within a two-week window in November 2000, adding to the existing 25 states.

Chhattisgarh was created out of the Chhattisgarh region of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000, becoming India's 26th state. It was the first of the three newly formed states in that reorganisation.

• Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) was carved out of Uttar Pradesh eight days later, on 9 November 2000, becoming the 27th state — one position after Chhattisgarh, not the 26th.

• Jharkhand was separated from Bihar on 15 November 2000, the last of the three, becoming the 28th state.

• Goa attained full statehood on 30 May 1987, as the 25th state — well before the 2000 reorganisation and one position earlier.
