Freedom fighter Shankar Shah belonged to which royal family ?

Erstwhile Indian princely and royal families are each identified by a specific ruling dynasty and home region; many played a distinct, region-specific role in resisting British colonial rule, including during the Revolt of 1857.

Shankar Shah was a ruler of the Gond royal family, the dynasty of the Gondwana region (the Garha-Mandla kingdom) centred on present-day Jabalpur district in Madhya Pradesh. During the Revolt of 1857, Shankar Shah and his son Raghunath Shah conspired with mutineering sepoys of the 52nd Native Infantry against British rule; both were arrested and executed by the British in September 1857. Shankar Shah therefore belonged to the Gond royal family.

Why the other royal families do not fit:

• Ramgarh royal family: a princely estate of the Mandla region in Madhya Pradesh, ruled by the Lodhi lineage (notably Rani Avantibai Lodhi), distinct from the Gondwana Gond dynasty.

• Raghogarh royal family: a princely state of the Malwa-Gwalior tract of central India, ruled by a Khichi Chauhan Rajput lineage.

• Udaypur (Udaipur) royal family: the seat of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty of the Mewar region of Rajasthan.
