A country's capital is the city that is constitutionally or officially designated as the seat of its national government — the location where the head of state, the national legislature, and the principal ministries are headquartered.

South Sudan became an independent, sovereign country on 9 July 2011. Article 50(4) of its Transitional Constitution names Juba as the national capital and the seat of the National Government, and the President, the National Legislative Assembly, and the central ministries are all headquartered there.

• Wau is a city in north-western South Sudan and is the capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal State — a state capital, not the national capital.

• Lainya is a county town in Central Equatoria State, south of Juba, and functions only as a county-level administrative centre.

• Mukaya is a payam (a sub-county administrative unit) inside Lainya County — an even smaller administrative division than a county town.

Hence, Juba is the capital of South Sudan.
