What is the state bird of Uttar Pradesh?

Indian states officially notify state symbols, such as a state bird, animal, tree and flower, through their forest or biodiversity departments, chosen to mark local ecological or cultural importance and to anchor conservation efforts.

Uttar Pradesh notified the Sarus Crane (Antigone antigone) as its state bird. The Sarus Crane is the tallest flying bird in the world, standing up to about 1.8 metres, and is closely associated with the wetlands, marshes and paddy fields spread across the Gangetic plain of Uttar Pradesh, where it breeds year-round unlike most other cranes.

• Peacock: this is India's national bird, declared in 1963, not Uttar Pradesh's state bird.

• Sparrow: a common urban bird; Delhi notified the house sparrow as its own state bird in 2012, not Uttar Pradesh.

• Parrot (rose-ringed parakeet): Andhra Pradesh's own state bird since 2018, not Uttar Pradesh's.

Uttar Pradesh's state bird is therefore the Sarus Crane.
