Several major rivers of the Indus river system originate in or flow through Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir - Beas, Sutlej, Chenab, and Jhelum. Correctly locating a river-linked event requires matching the event's stated location (district and state) to each river's actual course, since these rivers pass through different regions and hydropower catchments.

In the reported incident, a group of engineering students from Hyderabad on a study tour to Himachal Pradesh were swept away in June 2014 near the Larji Hydro Power Project in Mandi district. That project sits on the Beas River, and an unannounced release of water from the project suddenly raised the river's level, drowning several students who were on the riverbed for photographs.

• Sutlej flows through the Kinnaur, Shimla, and Bilaspur districts of Himachal Pradesh, not through the Mandi-Kullu stretch where this incident occurred.

• Chenab forms in Lahaul-Spiti but flows onward mainly through the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, well outside the incident location.

• Jhelum flows through the Kashmir Valley of Jammu and Kashmir before continuing onward into Pakistan-administered territory, and does not pass through Himachal Pradesh at all.
