The 'Madhubani' folk-art style is associated with which state?

Many of India's folk-art forms are named directly after their region or town of origin and remain concentrated within that particular community and area — recognising the art form's name is often enough to identify its home region.

Madhubani painting (also called Mithila painting) takes its name from Madhubani district in the Mithila cultural region of Bihar, where it developed over centuries as a domestic art practised mainly by women — first on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of homes, later on handmade paper and cloth. It uses natural/vegetable dyes and pigments, bold double-line borders, and depicts themes from Hindu mythology (Rama-Sita, Krishna, Durga), nature (fish, peacocks, the sun and moon), and social/ritual occasions (weddings), rendered as flat, two-dimensional, geometric compositions with almost no empty space.

None of the other three states is the traditional home of Madhubani art:

• Uttarakhand's signature folk-art form is Aipan.

• Madhya Pradesh is known for Gond and Bhil tribal painting.

• Uttar Pradesh is known for crafts such as Chikankari embroidery and Banarasi weaving rather than this painting style.

So Bihar is the only state among the options genuinely tied to Madhubani art.
