Concept

A defence mechanism is an unconscious strategy of the ego that reduces the anxiety produced by a feeling, impulse, or shortcoming the person cannot accept in themselves.

Projection is the mechanism that settles this anxiety by relocating the disowned attribute onto other people: the trait is refused in the self and then perceived, and usually criticised, in others.

Application

Trace the behaviour described in the stem, step by step:

1. The trigger is internal — the student's own frustration at performing poorly.

2. The attribute the student cannot accept is an insufficient effort on their own part.

3. Rather than owning that attribute, the student asserts it of the classmates: it is they who are not working hard enough.

4. The uncomfortable attribute has therefore travelled from the self to other people, which is exactly the operation the term projection names.

Contrast with the near-miss mechanisms

• Rationalization would leave the shortcoming with the student but dress it in an acceptable reason, such as an unfairly set paper or a teacher who does not explain well.

• Denial would refuse the reality itself, so the student would not accept that the performance was poor at all.

• Sublimation would channel the frustration into a socially valued outlet such as extra practice, sport, or art, instead of into an accusation.
