Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterised by recurrent obsessions (intrusive, unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety). In the classical classification followed by DSM-IV and ICD-10 - the framework used in teacher-eligibility and psychology examinations - OCD is grouped under anxiety disorders, because the obsessions generate marked anxiety and the compulsions are anxiety-reducing acts. Hence OCD is an anxiety disorder.
