Let the Speed of the Stream = x km/hr
Let the Speed of the boat = y Km/hr
When boat goes downstream, Speeds are added and when boat goes upstream Speeds are subtracted.
For Downstream
⇒ x + y = 40 ............... (i)
For Up stream
⇒ y - x = 14 ................... (ii)
Solving (i) , (ii)
⇒ y = 27 km/hr
⇒ x = 13 km/hr
