Correct answer: B

Solution:

  • Let the actual cost price be x rupees.

  • Selling at 10% profit gives the selling price = 1.10x.

  • If he had bought it 10% cheaper, the cost would be 0.9x; selling that at 20% profit gives 1.20×0.9x = 1.08x.

  • The problem states this alternate selling price is 0.25 rupee less than the original selling price, so:

  • 1.08x = 1.10x − 0.25

  • Rearrange: 0.02x = 0.25 ⇒ x = 0.25 / 0.02 = 12.5 rupees.

Therefore the cost price is 12.5 rupees. The original selling price at 10% profit is 1.10 × 12.5 = 13.75 rupees.
